This film shows two sides of being a female. It compares a girl's desire to find the right man and have that fairy tale wedding with the need to be accepted by other females. The protagonist simply couldn't say no, as proven by her failed attempt to do so in a bar scene during the movie.
She is always the protector, the mother figure, and this winds up backfiring immensely. Her long-term secret crusher on her boss is destroyed the second he meets her seductive kid sister, who winds up getting him to propose to her in the end through a series of lies about herself such as being a vegan and loving dogs.
It catches up to them in the end, though. She finally gets her dream wedding, kid sis loses the boy and wins him back by telling the truth about who she really is (a carnivore who can't stand dogs!), and everyone ends happily ever after, right?
Well, this is just a contemporary movie, but a lot of the parts being played can be found in everyday life.
For example, what relatively normal female can say with honesty that she desires to be alone? Nobody. Why is this? Because it is absolutely hard-wired in our heads to seek companionship. From the moment we are brought into the world of play dates and Barbie dolls with our sisters and childhood friends, we enter the realm of "loner seeking lonely." The problem with this is that nobody is attracted to the lonely ones. We want somebody who is happy with themselves, desired by others around them, and attractive to our minds. So, we "fake it 'til you make it." We put on a smile and pray that somebody sees the real person behind the mask.
With women overwhelming men by about 4 to 1 in this country, it seems almost absolute that not each girl will get their dream man. Some of us will probably wind up getting into the realm of divorced, lower-income, unmotivated males at some point. The perfect guy doesn't happen for all of us, and for those who do find the perfect ten, that girl is going to be disliked by those of us who never get there.
The key is to remember to stay true to yourself and be happy with your life as it is. So what if you're alone? Order some Chinese take-out and jam out to some good music. Call up the girls and have a few cocktails. Learn how to say no to taking the first thing that lands in your lap. Say yes to yourself, and accept your position in life regardless of what society (or your biological clock) is telling you.
F-Word, Chapter 7 really brings home this issue: "Many women aren't waiting for Prince Charming to buy them a ring and are purchasing their own bling-bling. Right-hand diamond rings are a hip, fashionable commodity with the singleton set. Single women have thrown off the cultural stigma of being an "old maid," and many women are delaying marriage, choosing not to marry, and defining new ways to be in relationships."
